CPJ says his location was not disclosed for more than three weeks before he appeared before the Supreme State Security Prosecution.

Qandil has reportedly been accused of joining, leading and financing a terrorist group and was remanded in custody. The signatory organizations strongly dispute the treatment of the detainees and have raised concerns about enforced disappearance, religious freedom, press freedom and due process.

Journalists must be able to document arrests and matters of public interest without being subjected to retaliation. At the same time, all allegations should be examined through independent and lawful proceedings, with access to legal counsel and full respect for the presumption of innocence.

The information and allegations in this report are attributed to CPJ and its partner organizations.
