Overlapping emergencies across the region
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs published its Latin America and the Caribbean Weekly Situation Update as of 31 July 2026 through ReliefWeb on 1 August. The update brings together food-security, disaster and access concerns that are unfolding simultaneously across the region.
In Venezuela, humanitarian needs remain elevated following the earthquakes of 24 June. Affected households are continuing to recover from displacement while 3.4 million people require humanitarian food assistance, according to the update.
Haiti faces a similarly severe food-security outlook. OCHA reports that 3.4 million people could experience Crisis or Emergency levels of acute food insecurity, classified as IPC Phase 3 or Phase 4.
In Chile, severe storms have left 9,700 people isolated in the Coquimbo region. The figure underlines how extreme weather can quickly interrupt access to communities and essential services.
A regional warning
The update shows that humanitarian actors in Latin America and the Caribbean are responding to several types of emergency at once: earthquake recovery, acute hunger and weather-related isolation. OCHA’s weekly overview is intended to support a common operational picture for responders and decision-makers.
