The DRC Ebola outbreak had reached nearly 3,500 confirmed Bundibugyo virus disease cases and more than 1,500 deaths by 28 July 2026, according to a Logistics Cluster telecommunications situation report. Response teams are expanding connectivity, radio coverage and backup power across affected areas, with Kisangani in Tshopo province identified as the current hotspot and priority locations also in Ituri.
Kisangani emerges as an Ebola hotspot
The report covers 20–31 July and describes a widening operational footprint. While early response priorities centred on Ituri, Kisangani has emerged as a hotspot, increasing the need for reliable communications that can support health operations, coordination and staff safety.
Telecommunications capacity is being strengthened in Bunia, where a new Telecoms Coordinator and Technical Specialist have deployed with a Starlink kit. The team is also working with the United Nations Department of Safety and Security to improve radio coverage in and around the city.
LTC Telecoms expands emergency connectivity
The Logistics Cluster’s telecoms team has acquired 20 Starlink Mini units for deployment in priority locations. Additional Mini and standard kits have arrived in Kinshasa and are being prepared for affected areas as responders map gaps and scale services.
A connectivity mapping survey is intended to identify unmet needs, avoid duplication and direct assistance to locations where communications remain weakest. The team is also expanding information-management support alongside field connectivity.
Backup power and security communications
Plans include solar and backup electrical equipment for Mongbwalu General Hospital and further work on security communications. These measures are intended to keep critical systems functioning where power and network availability are unreliable.
The report shows how communications infrastructure has become part of the operational backbone of the Ebola response, linking health facilities, humanitarian teams and security systems across a dispersed outbreak area.
